Some comments from former interns:

Krupa Desai, Junior Yale University
Major: American Studies
Over the summer I worked on the planning of the public program Calling the Question. To that end, I researched issues and legislation brought about by cultural globalization. One of the many benefits of working at the Center was that I got to be part of a non-profit organization in the growing field of cultural policy. Since the Center is growing so fast each intern is trusted with a real project that fills an important slot in the Centers agenda.

Sarah Crowley, Senior Princeton University
Major: Comparative Literature
In the course of the summer I worked on several different research projects having to do with freedom of expression and comparative cultural policy. The internship exposed me to a whole spectrum of policy involvement in Washington through the Friday seminar program, in which a variety of academics, lobbyists and policy makers came to speak to the interns. I was also given the opportunity to attend several conferences in the arts and policy fields.

Rob Kimmer, Junior Emory University
Major: Journalism and Theater
This summer I helped to work on the Center’s network program by researching fellowship programs and helping to plan the July Network Conference. In addition to this I worked on new content and design for the Center’s website. Throughout the summer I learned about the world of non-profit arts organizations from the inside, which for me was a totally new experience. As an intern, I never expected to be given so much independence and so many responsibilities within the organization.

Scott Einberger, Senior University of Colorado
Major: Finance and Management
As a summer intern for the Center I was given a chance to work on real projects that had tangible results. My main responsibility was working on making the website easier to understand and navigate. This included designing parts of a database to make the required information up loadable to the web. As a business major I found working at the Center to be an excellent chance to see how the non-profit sector operates and to learn more about the arts industry as a whole.

Anne FitzSimmons, John Hopkins University
M.A. in Policy Studies
I was assigned to work on locating arts and culture funding in the federal budget. I accomplished creating an interesting and valuable research project with long term sustainability. This internship has grounded and furthered my professional interest in the arts and culture. The internship was an engaging and productive learning experience. The Centers staff was flexible and easy to work with and they gave everybody a chance to work on the topics they wanted to.

Josh Freemire, Junior Trinity College
Major: Philosophy and English
I worked on a variety of issues this summer, from researching a bibliography for the center to keep on file, to keeping track of the various cultural policy issues presented by IT. It has been a great experience an actually demonstration that research can be real world applicable and proof that my analysis of situations can be worth something. I’ve really enjoyed being able to investigate and report on something of interest to me rather than filing and answering phones. I certainly will continue to investigate future possibilities in this line of work, maybe law school isn’t such a bad idea after all.
